Labirinto della Masone

The ticket is a day ticket. You can leave and come back in, which matters if you want lunch in the entrance court. It includes:

• The maze. The paths are concrete, so any shoes will do and rain does not close it. The bamboo reaches up to 15 m. The perimeter is star-shaped, and the exit at the center is a small pyramid chapel. The Labirinto says it is the largest maze made entirely of bamboo; we have no independent way to check that, and it does not change the visit.
• The collection. About 500 pieces over 5,000 square meters, from the 16th to the 20th century: Mannerists such as Carracci and Cambiaso, court artists of the Duchy of Parma, Hayez, the sculptor Adolfo Wildt, Ligabue, Savinio, and a run of skull-heavy Vanitas still lifes. It is hung by association, not by date, and it is the part people either love or rush through.
• The temporary show. Visioni. Milo Manara nel Labirinto runs October 3, 2026 to January 6, 2027.

The entrance court, with the bookshop, a restaurant, a bistro and a shop, is free to enter. The annual pass costs €50, so it only pays on a third visit.

It is open every day except Tuesday, and closed on December 25 and January 1. On Friday, October 2, 2026, the whole complex closes at 6 p.m. instead of 7 p.m.

Winter is the one to check. The official site lists winter hours through March 2027 and does not announce a winter break. But in 2026 the Castelli del Ducato circuit recorded the Labirinto as closed from January 7 to February 6. If you are going in January or early February 2027, check the Labirinto's news page before you drive out.

By car it is 21.4 km (13 miles) from Piazza Garibaldi, about 26 minutes. The Labirinto says to follow the Via Emilia towards Fidenza from the Parma Ovest motorway exit. The address is Strada Masone 121, Fontanellato.

By bus it is awkward. From Monday to Saturday, TEP line 23 runs from Parma station to Fontanellato once an hour, at 23 minutes past, in 40 minutes, for a €4 single. But the bus stops in the town, and the Labirinto is about 5 km from the moated castle by road. You would need a taxi for the last leg; the Labirinto gives +39 347 3731302 for runs from Parma, Fidenza and their stations. It does not publish a fare for that leg.

By train, the nearest stations are Fidenza and Parma. Either way the last part is by taxi. Radio Taxi Parma publishes a fixed daytime fare of €35 one way from Parma to the Labirinto, so a taxi both ways is €70, three and a half times the ticket. The meter rate is €4 plus €1.60 per km by day. Our car-free planning page lists the places that are easier by bus.

The obvious pairing is the Rocca Sanvitale in the center of Fontanellato, 5.2 km away, about 10 minutes by car. The castle has Parmigianino's Diana and Actaeon room and a working 19th-century camera obscura, and its full visit costs €12. The castle closes for lunch on weekdays and the Labirinto does not, so the easy order is the castle at 10 a.m. and the maze after lunch.

On discounts: the Castelli del Ducato circuit lists a Rocca Sanvitale ticket among the ones that get the €16 reduced price at the Labirinto. The Labirinto's own list of partner discounts does not mention it. Keep your castle ticket and ask; do not count on it.

Go if you have a car or are happy to pay for taxis, and you like the idea of a private collection hung to a collector's whims. The maze is a pleasant 45 minutes; the collection is what turns €20 into a fair price. Children usually enjoy the maze more than adults expect.

Skip it if you are doing Parma by train and bus, if you have one day in Parma, or if you have no interest in the art. Weather: the paths are paved and the Labirinto stays open in rain. If heavy rain spoils the visit, it says it gives a discount voucher for a return ticket.
