The castles of the Duchy of Parma

Torrechiara is the one to see if you see one. Pier Maria Rossi built it between 1448 and 1460 on a hill above the Parma valley, and it survives with its walls, four towers and the frescoed Camera d'Oro. It is state-run, which keeps the ticket at €8, free under 18 and on the first Sunday of the month. Tuesday to Friday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (last entry 2:30 p.m.); weekends and holidays 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; closed Mondays. City line 12 reaches it hourly from Monday to Saturday for €4.

Rocca Sanvitale in Fontanellato, 21.6 km (13 miles) north-west, is a moated castle in the middle of a town, with a small room Parmigianino painted in 1523 and 1524: Diana and Actaeon. The full route is €12, with a working 19th-century camera obscura upstairs. Closed Tuesdays except in April and May; weekdays close from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Line 23 runs hourly from Parma station, 40 minutes, €4.

• Rocca Meli Lupi, Soragna, 33 km. The best furnished interiors and the only family still in residence. Guided only, in Italian, €15 (€20 with the park). Weekday tours at 3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. until November 1, 2026; six a day at weekends. Pair it with Fontanellato, 8 km away, or with Busseto, 10.3 km. For one castle slot, choose Torrechiara or Fontanellato instead.
• Reggia di Colorno, 17.8 km. A ducal summer palace, not a castle and not a Versailles, whatever the posters say. €12 guided or €10 with the audioguide, about 80 minutes; the garden is free. The train takes 16 minutes for €2.70. Pair it with a culatello lunch at Al Vèdel, 3.3 km away (closed Monday and Tuesday).
• Antica Corte Pallavicina, Polesine Parmense, 41 km. A fortified farm on the Po; its castle rooms are €3 on top of the €7 Culatello Museum, Tuesday to Sunday. Worth it as part of a culatello lunch, not on its own.
• Fortezza di Bardi, 69.3 km (43 miles), about 74 minutes by car into the Val Ceno. A true military fortress on a red jasper spur, with walkways, towers, prisons and several small museums. €10, €6 under 14. In October it opens Thursday and Friday 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at weekends and holidays; in November and December, weekends and holidays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Worth it only as a mountain day; it is too far for a castle-hopping loop from Parma.

San Secondo is the home of spalla cotta, so it pairs with lunch; Roccabianca pairs with the November Porc weekend there on November 27 to 29, 2026; Montechiarugolo is 27 minutes from Torrechiara if your dates match its calendar. Compiano is 38 minutes beyond Bardi, so it belongs to the same mountain day, if it is open.

1. Torrechiara and Langhirano: the castle at 9 a.m., a ham house at 10:30 a.m. (Conti's English tour, on set dates only). Bus 12 reaches both towns, but Conti itself is car or taxi only.
2. Fontanellato and the Labirinto: the Rocca in the morning, the bamboo maze (€20) in the afternoon. Never on a Tuesday.
3. Three castles by car on a weekday: Torrechiara at 9 a.m., Fontanellato before 1 p.m., lunch on the Po, Soragna at 4:30 p.m. Our castles-by-car day has the timings.
4. Soragna, Busseto and the Bassa: castle, Verdi and culatello in one flat loop by car; see the Bassa and the Po.
5. Colorno and Al Vèdel: a half day by car, or by train plus the 3.3 km from the palace to the trattoria.
6. Bardi and Compiano: a weekend mountain day, 25 km apart.

• State combined ticket, €25: Torrechiara, the Pilotta museums in Parma, the Spezieria of San Giovanni and the Roman site of Veleia. It saves money only if you also pay full price at the Pilotta (€18); on its own Torrechiara is €8.
• Castelli del Ducato card: member castles list reductions for holders: €11 instead of €12 at Fontanellato, €13 instead of €15 at Soragna, €1 off at Bardi, €7 instead of €10 at Compiano, €6 instead of €8 at San Secondo, €5 instead of €6 at Varano. The circuit's card page did not show the card's own price when we checked, so we cannot say whether it pays.
• Labirinto discount: the circuit lists a Rocca Sanvitale ticket as giving the €16 reduced price at the Labirinto; the Labirinto's own list does not. Ask.
• Free days: Torrechiara, a state site, is free on the first Sunday of each month (next: October 4, November 1, December 6, 2026). Expect crowds.

Four are realistic: Torrechiara on city line 12 (hourly Monday to Saturday, €4), Fontanellato on line 23 (hourly Monday to Saturday, €4), Soragna on line 2120 (a 12:50 p.m. weekday bus that makes the 3 p.m. tour, €4.80), and Colorno by train (16 minutes, €2.70). Sunday buses are thin everywhere. The rest need a car; see whether you need a car in Parma and the Food Valley without a car.

• Villa Verdi at Sant'Agata: often sold with Busseto, but closed since 2022, state-owned since December 2024, with no reopening date.
• The Camera di San Paolo in Parma, listed on the circuit: closed for restoration until an expected spring 2027 reopening.
• Any castle on a Monday: Torrechiara, Soragna and most others are shut; Colorno is closed on non-holiday Mondays for much of the year.
• Bardi or Compiano as a detour from a Parma city break: over an hour each way for one castle.

Fontanellato: Labirinto della Masone Full-Day Entry Ticket

The Labirinto's own adult ticket is €20, so this costs a little more. Includes a discount at Rocca Sanvitale. No transport.
