The Food Valley without a car

You can see most of the Food Valley without renting a car. A working Parmigiano Reggiano dairy is 4.8 km (3 miles) from Piazza Garibaldi, inside the city. Hourly city bus 12 runs on to Torrechiara castle and Langhirano, the prosciutto town, Monday to Saturday. Balsamic vinegar is a 29-minute, €6.30 train ride away in Modena, where one producer gives free tastings. The castles of Colorno and Fontanellato have a train and a bus.
Two things resist public transport: culatello country on the Po, and weekday visits inside prosciutto houses. For those, take a van tour or a taxi at a fixed fare. Sundays are the other trap: the country buses thin out to a handful of runs. Parmigiano Reggiano: a dairy by city bus
Cheese is made early, so this is a morning job. Caseificio Ugolotti, Via Emilio Lepido 72, runs a 1.5-hour tour in English from €23, starting at 9 a.m. when the curd is being worked. The dairy gives the nearest bus stop as "Park est" on line 23; an ordinary €2 urban ticket covers it. By taxi, Radio Taxi Parma's meter tariff (€4 plus €1.60 per km by day, €1.90 more if it comes to you) comes to roughly €12–€14 each way. The dairy suspends tours in December.
Further out, the Consortium lists dairies from €5 to €30, but most need a car. Details and alternatives are in Parmigiano Reggiano dairy visit. The Parmigiano Reggiano Museum has moved to Fontevivo (TEP fare €3 from Parma station) and opens only at weekends from March to early December; check the holiday bus timetable before you rely on it.
Prosciutto and Torrechiara: bus 12
TEP's urban line 12 continues into the hills once an hour, Monday to Saturday. From Parma station (lower level, urban stops) buses leave at 21 minutes past the hour, from 7:21 a.m. They reach Torrechiara at 57 minutes past (36 minutes, €4) and Langhirano at 8 minutes past the next hour. Buses back leave Langhirano at 23 minutes past and Torrechiara at 30 minutes past. On Sundays and holidays there are only four buses each way.
That makes a good day: Torrechiara castle (€8, closed Mondays; weekdays until 3 p.m.) in the morning, lunch in Langhirano, then the Museo del Prosciutto (€5, or €4 with a Torrechiara ticket at weekends). The museum opens on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., March 1 to December 8.
The limit is the ham houses themselves. Salumificio Conti's €26 tour says car or taxi only, and there is no live production at weekends. The taxi from Parma is not on Radio Taxi's fixed list; Torrechiara is €30, and Langhirano is 6 km further.
Balsamic vinegar: a train to Modena
Traditional balsamic is made around Modena and Reggio Emilia, not Parma. Tours sold as balsamic "from Parma" drive you there. On your own: regional trains to Modena take 29 minutes for €6.30. Acetaia Malpighi offers free guided tours and tastings by reservation (book 48 hours ahead) at its museum on Via Vignolese, by the Modena Sud exit, or at its showroom on Piazza Roma in the centre. Colorno also gives you culatello at lunch: Al Vèdel, with its own cellar, is 3.3 km from the palace.
What honestly needs a car
- Culatello: Antica Corte Pallavicina at Polesine is 41 km (25 miles), 48 minutes' drive. TEP buses link the Bassa villages to Busseto and Fidenza, but not usefully for a visit. See the Bassa and the Po.
- Wineries in the Colli di Parma, such as Monte delle Vigne at Ozzano Taro, 21 km away.
- Weekday ham-house tours and most dairies outside the city.
- Sundays anywhere in the country: four buses to Torrechiara, two to Fontanellato.
Tours versus doing it yourself
Van tours solve the car problem and the booking. Compare a carless DIY day: Ugolotti dairy €23 and a taxi there and back of about €24–€28, then bus 12 to Torrechiara (€8 return) and the castle (€8). That is about €65 a person, and less for two sharing the taxi, or about €43 using bus 23 to the dairy. Not practically. Polesine and Zibello are about 40 km from Parma, and the local buses are not timed for visitors. Drive, take a tour, or taste culatello in Parma or at Al Vèdel near Colorno, which is a 16-minute train to Colorno and a 3.3 km walk from the palace.
