Parma and Bologna are 58 minutes apart by regional train, for €8.50. Either can be your base for the other. The honest way to choose is to price the same night in both and add up what each base costs you in day trips.
We searched Kayak for Wednesday, October 14, 2026, two adults, one night, three- and four-star hotels, on September 29. Parma's four-star median was €133.50; Bologna's was €174. Bologna's tourist tax is also higher. For a trip centered on Parma food, that settles it. Bologna earns its place only if Florence or Venice are also on your list.

Hotel prices on the same night
Kayak prices shown are the total for the stay including the taxes and fees Kayak displays, for the hotels its default sort listed first with the three- and four-star filter. We counted only hotels inside each city's own boundary.

The cheapest rooms are close in both cities. The gap opens at the typical hotel, and it is widest where visitors actually book: near the stations and the centers. A few named examples for the same night:

October 14 is not a quiet date in either city: Festival Verdi is on in Parma, and Bologna's congress center hosts the Hydro 2026 conference from October 14 to 16. Prices on other dates will differ; the direction of the gap is what to take away.
The tourist tax adds to the gap
Bologna charges by the room price per person per night, net of VAT, for all of 2026: €4 up to €30.99, €5.80 up to €70.99, €6.50 up to €120.99 and €7 above that. Under-14s are exempt. At the €174 median four-star, that is €6.50 each, €13 a night for two. At the €140 three-star median it is €5.80 each, €11.60 for two.
Parma charges by stars. Hotel chains quote €4 per adult per night at four stars, for up to 5 nights, with under-18s exempt: €8 a night for two. Three-star hotels show about €2.50 each on Booking.com. We could not reach the city's own tax page, so treat Parma's figures as the hotels' word.

Every Food Valley morning on this site starts in Parma: the tours meet by Parma station, the nearest dairy is inside the city limits, and Torrechiara is a 36-minute city bus ride. From Bologna each of those days starts with an hour on a train, and dairy visits start at 9 a.m. A Parma base also saves €63 per person on the one Parma food tour that runs from Bologna.
Bologna's advantages are real but specific. It is on the high-speed line to Florence and Rome, it has direct trains to Venice, and its airport is the region's main one. If two of your days are Florence and Venice, the train savings from a Bologna base cover much of the hotel gap.
Food, evenings and crowds
Both cities eat well; UNESCO named Parma a Creative City of Gastronomy in 2015. The difference is scale. Parma's center is compact: Piazza Garibaldi to the Duomo is 400 m, and the aperitivo bars of Strada Farini are 5 minutes from either. Bologna is a larger university city with more late-night choice and, on the streets around its main square, more visitors.
Parma's quiet has a cost. Many trattorie close one weekday, and the Pilotta and Torrechiara shut on Mondays. If you want a different bar every night of a week, Bologna gives you more. If you want anolini at €13 and a walk home in 5 minutes, Parma does.
Which to choose
- Parma for Parma plus the Food Valley, castles, Modena or Busseto. Stay in the Duomo quarter or by the station if you will ride trains daily. Do Bologna as a day trip.
- Bologna for a trip that also includes Florence or Venice, or a flight that lands late at Bologna airport. Do Parma as a day trip; our Parma from Bologna itinerary fits it into one day.
