Worth it 59
Parma Cathedral (Duomo)
The one free sight in Parma you should not skip. Correggio's dome is the reason, the 1178 Antelami Deposition is the bonus, and it is open all day.
As of September 2026
Baptistery of Parma
Yes, pay the €12. The painted dome and the Months sculptures are the best medieval interior in Parma, and the permit adds the museum that holds the Baptistery's original statues.
As of September 2026
Palazzo della Pilotta
The best-value ticket in Parma. The Teatro Farnese alone justifies the €18, and the Galleria Nazionale adds Leonardo, Correggio and Parmigianino. Arrive after 5 p.m. for €10 if you only want the highlights.
As of September 2026
Teatro Farnese
The most striking room in Parma, and already paid for if you buy the Pilotta ticket. Do not rush it to get to the paintings.
As of September 2026
San Giovanni Evangelista
Free, three minutes from the Duomo, and the only place where Correggio and the young Parmigianino worked side by side. Pay the €5 for the Spezieria only if you like apothecary jars and old interiors.
As of September 2026
Santa Maria della Steccata
Free, central and short. The Parmigianino arch is the reason; the story behind it, and the dukes below, make it stick.
As of September 2026
Piazza Garibaldi
You will cross it anyway. Stop long enough to read the sundials and the clock tower, and come back at aperitivo time, when the square does what it was built for.
As of September 2026
Parco Ducale
Free, open until midnight in summer, and the best green space in the center. Come for a walk and the restored fountain, not for the palace, which you probably cannot enter.
As of September 2026
San Francesco del Prato
Free, close to the Duomo and unlike any other church in Parma: a Gothic nave that still carries the marks of nearly two centuries as a jail. Twenty minutes well spent.
As of September 2026
Parmigiano Reggiano dairy visit
Book Ugolotti direct for €23 and take the bus or a short taxi. It is the cheapest and closest way to watch cheese being made. Pay for the €135 tour only if you also want a ham house and have no car.
As of September 2026
Culatello cellar tasting
For €15 you see the cellars that made culatello famous and taste it where it is made. Worth the drive for anyone who liked it on a Parma plate. Avoid Mondays, and check October 18.
As of September 2026
Traditional balsamic vinegar tasting
Worth half a day if you will ever buy a real bottle: a tasting teaches you what €12 IGP and aged DOP are. Book Malpighi free, or San Giacomo for €28 if you want the owner's detail. Skip balsamic 'museums' in souvenir shops.
As of September 2026
An opera night at the Teatro Regio
Verdi in the theater that judges Verdi hardest is the evening to plan a Parma trip around. Book the Festival as soon as dates are fixed; if seats are gone or too dear, take the €12 daytime tour instead.
As of September 2026
Wine tasting in the Colli di Parma
At €20 for a tour and three glasses, one of the best-value visits in the Food Valley. It works only if someone in your group drives and does not drink, or you book a driver.
As of September 2026
Cycling Parma
The best way to cover Parma beyond the center and the only car-free way into the flatlands. Rent a proper bike at the station for the day rather than paying share-bike minutes; skip hunting for a guided tour.
As of September 2026
Festival Verdi
Yes, if you like opera even a little: Verdi's own festival in Verdi's own town, with a real rarity (Alzira) and a chance to hear music in the Teatro Farnese. Book the Regio directly rather than through a package.
As of September 2026
Festival del Prosciutto di Parma
If your trip touches the first half of September and you have a car, yes: €2 to stand inside a working curing room is the best-value ham visit of the year. The piazza party alone is not worth rearranging a trip for.
As of September 2026
Torrechiara Castle
The best-preserved castle near Parma, cheap at €8 and the only one you can reach by a frequent bus. Go on a weekday morning; the Sunday bus timetable makes it a long day.
As of September 2026
Rocca Sanvitale, Fontanellato
Parmigianino's Diana and Actaeon room alone justifies €12, and the castle is the easiest castle day from Parma by bus. Avoid Tuesdays and the weekday lunch break.
As of September 2026
Modena
The best day trip from Parma by train: cheap, fast and very different in feel. Book the Ghirlandina slot ahead, and do not plan the day around Osteria Francescana unless you have €350 a head and a reservation.
As of September 2026
Historic centre loop
The walk for first-timers and anyone with one day: every essential sight in a compact loop, with three of them free. Time it for the afternoon and it costs €22 for the two big tickets.
As of September 2026
Oltretorrente walk
Worth it on a second day, or on a first day if you care about 20th-century history or Toscanini. It is the part of Parma most visitors never cross into, and the only ticket is €4.
As of September 2026
Parks walk: Parco Ducale to the Cittadella
The walk for a slow day, for families, or for anyone who has done the churches: two very different ducal spaces, free, with somewhere for children to run at both ends. Skip it on a short first visit if the churches and the Pilotta are still ahead of you.
As of September 2026
Evening aperitivo walk
The best free entertainment in Parma costs the price of two or three glasses: this is how the city spends its early evenings. Go Thursday to Saturday; on Sunday the walk loses its best stop.
As of September 2026
Centro Storico
Stay here if you are arriving by train or can leave the car in a garage: every major sight is within 10 minutes on foot. Drivers who want to use the car daily should stay outside the zone instead.
As of September 2026
The Duomo Quarter
The best base in Parma for a first visit without a car: the three churches you came for are on your doorstep, the streets are car-free around the clock, and Piazza Garibaldi is 5 minutes away. Drivers should park outside and walk in.
As of September 2026
Oltretorrente
Worth a half-day on foot for the Parco Ducale, Toscanini and the 1922 story, and the smart side of town to sleep if you have a car. For a first trip without one, the Duomo side is more convenient.
As of September 2026
Palazzo Dalla Rosa Prati
No address in Parma beats it for the Duomo and the Baptistery, and the apartments make it the best choice for families and longer stays. Book early: on a busy October date the only unit left was a €339 suite.
As of September 2026
Hotel Stendhal
The best-placed four-star for walking everything, including the train. Book the room-only rate and eat breakfast in a bar; the hotel's €15 breakfast turns a fair price into an ordinary one.
As of September 2026
Hotel Button
The best-located cheap bed in Parma. At €78 to €118 for a double with free cancellation you are 2 minutes from Piazza Garibaldi. Drivers should add €13 to €16 a day for a car park and 10 minutes of walking.
As of September 2026
Hotel Torino
The best position in Parma for an opera night and the Duomo, at a three-star price. Book it for those; skip it if you want to come and go with a car, because the 1 p.m. rule and the €25 valet add friction.
As of September 2026
Sina Maria Luigia
The best value four-star for train travellers who also want to walk to the sights: breakfast included, 8 minutes to both the platforms and the Duomo, and €46 less than NH Parma on October 14.
As of September 2026
Antica Corte Pallavicina Relais
If you are making the culatello pilgrimage for dinner, staying over is the sensible way to do it: €190 to €220 for a double with breakfast, no night drive through the Bassa fog, and the cellars at breakfast distance. As a base for Parma city, skip it.
As of September 2026
Antica Corte Pallavicina
Worth the drive for anyone who came to Parma for its cured meats: you see culatello aging in the cellars, then eat it at three ages. If €150 is too much, the Hosteria's €18 culatello board and €12 pasta give you the place for a fraction.
As of September 2026
Trattoria Ai Due Platani
Worth it: the best all-round Parma trattoria meal this guide could verify, with a Bib Gourmand, fair prices and a room that still feels like the country. Book ahead and time dessert for the gelato.
As of September 2026
Ristorante Cocchi
Worth it from September to April, when the bollito trolley is on: this is the most complete version of Parma's Sunday table in town. In summer it is a good trattoria, not a reason to cross the river.
As of September 2026
Trattoria Antichi Sapori
Worth the 13-minute drive: a Bib Gourmand trattoria in Michelin's lowest price band, with some of the best tortelli around Parma. Without a car, weigh the taxi fare against a central Bib like Brisla.
As of September 2026
Brisla Trattoria
Worth it: a Bib Gourmand kitchen in the center with dishes you will not find elsewhere, at trattoria prices. Order the bomba di riso and let it take its 25 minutes.
As of September 2026
Osteria del 36
Worth it: a Michelin-listed kitchen at a trattoria price, a short walk from the Duomo. Book, and confirm opening before any July or August visit.
As of September 2026
Trattoria dei Corrieri
Worth it for the hours alone: when every other trattoria has shut its kitchen at 2:30 p.m., Corrieri is still serving tortelli. The food is standard Parma fare at a fair average, not the best in town.
As of September 2026
Trattoria del Tribunale
Worth it for a central, no-fuss Parma dinner: the classics cost €11–€13 a plate and the menu is online with prices. Order pasta and cured meat, not the €29 Rosa di Parma.
As of September 2026
Al Vèdel
Worth it as the lunch half of a Colorno day: you eat culatello where it is cured, at €22 for three ages, for less than half the starred price at Polesine. Book, and remember it shuts Monday and Tuesday.
As of September 2026
I Tri Siochètt
Worth it: a Bib Gourmand kitchen where a full Parma meal costs €32–€45 a head before wine, and tortelli with a shared culatello plate about €21. You need a taxi or car, and Sunday lunch is a family crowd, which is the point.
As of September 2026
Osteria dei Mascalzoni
Worth it, especially at lunch: €12 tortelli and €10 mains a few steps from Piazza Garibaldi is the best-value central meal this guide could verify. Dinner is fair but no longer a bargain.
As of September 2026
Parmigiano Reggiano
The one Parma food you can buy at the source, cheaply, and legally carry to the US. Buy 24 or 30 months in a 1 kg vacuum pack at a dairy shop. If you live in Britain, eat it here.
As of September 2026
Prosciutto di Parma
Eat it daily while you are here, sliced to order. Do not plan to fly it home: both US and UK rules stop it at the border, vacuum-packed or not.
As of September 2026
Culatello di Zibello
Worth a €14 plate, and worth the drive to the Bassa if you like cured meat. Buy a whole one only if you will eat it in Italy: at about €100 a kilo it cannot legally fly home to the US or UK.
As of September 2026
Anolini in brodo
The first course to order in Parma if you order only one. It costs no more than a plate of tortelli and it is the dish locals eat at Christmas. Order it on a cold day.
As of September 2026
Tortelli di erbetta
The meat-free Parma classic, and cheaper than anolini. Order them as a sharing plate if you are also having anolini, because the two are a pair.
As of September 2026
Torta fritta
Order it every time you order salumi. It costs less than a coffee and a pastry, and it is how Parma eats its cured meats.
As of September 2026
Salame di Felino
The cheapest DOP-or-IGP meat on a Parma board and the softest. Order it with torta fritta; skip the museum unless you are already in the hills on a weekend.
As of September 2026
Spalla cotta di San Secondo
The warm one on a board of cold cuts, and the only Parma salume you eat cooked. Order it with hot torta fritta. It is cheaper than culatello and more of a surprise.
As of September 2026
Bomba di riso
Worth planning a dinner around if you are in Parma Wednesday to Sunday. It is the one dish here you cannot get at every trattoria, and €22 buys a main course that doubles as a piece of history. Order it when you sit down.
As of September 2026
Lambrusco and Malvasia
Drink both, and drink them locally: they are cheap, they suit the food, and the good bottles rarely travel. Order Malvasia to start and Lambrusco with the salumi.
As of September 2026
Enoteca Tabarro
Worth it for anyone who cares what is in the glass: the list is deeper and more personal than anything else on Strada Farini. Ask the staff to choose, and accept that you pay for the selection, not the pour.
As of September 2026
Ombre Rosse
Worth it for the list: few bars anywhere pour this many Parma-area natural wines, and bottle prices start at €16. Come for an evening glass and a board, or book the restaurant side for dinner.
As of September 2026
Choice Cocktail Bar
Worth it: listed in a national cocktail-bar guide, and the drinks are made with real care for about €12. It is tiny, so go early or late on a weekday rather than at 11 p.m. on a Friday.
As of September 2026
Enoteca Fontana
Worth it for the cheapest good glass on Strada Farini and a room full of locals. Service reviews are mixed in 2025–2026, so come for the wine and the sandwich, not attentive table service.
As of September 2026
Bastian Contrario
Worth it for beer drinkers: a real brewery's own beers, fresh on tap, in the Oltretorrente, away from the Strada Farini crowd. Wine drinkers should stay on Strada Farini.
As of September 2026
It depends 40
Teatro Regio di Parma
Take the €12 tour only if you cannot get to a performance. Thirty minutes inside an empty house is pleasant; an evening in the same room with Verdi on stage is the real thing.
As of September 2026
Museo Glauco Lombardi
Worth €7 and an hour if Napoleon, Marie Louise or 19th-century court life interest you. If not, the Pilotta and the Duomo come first.
As of September 2026
Arturo Toscanini's Birthplace
Worth €4 and an hour if you care about opera, conducting or 20th-century history; Toscanini's life touches all three. If you do not, spend the hour at the Pilotta instead.
As of September 2026
Casa del Suono
Good for €4 if you like old technology or have children who have never seen a record player; the sound chandelier is a genuine surprise. For a short first visit, it is not a priority.
As of September 2026
Pinacoteca Stuard
A pleasant, uncrowded hour for €4 if you like early Italian panels and 17th-century painting. It is not a substitute for the Galleria Nazionale, and with the Camera di San Paolo shut, it is no longer a two-for-one visit.
As of September 2026
Prosciutto house visit in Langhirano
With a car, book Conti direct for €26 and pair it with Torrechiara Castle. Without one, the €87 van tour is the realistic option. Go on a weekday if you want to see hams being worked, not just hanging.
As of September 2026
Food Valley day tour
The tour costs €120 or more above the direct price per person, and that premium buys a driver and a guide. Worth it for carless visitors and first-timers who want no logistics; poor value for two people with a hire car.
As of September 2026
Parma city food walking tour
Worth €65 on your first day if you want a local to explain what you are eating and where to shop. If you are confident ordering, the free city trail and one trattoria board teach the same things for a quarter of the price.
As of September 2026
The Food Museums (Musei del Cibo)
Worth it on a weekend drive, paired with a castle or a producer visit: €5 buys a clear hour on how each food is made. Not worth a special trip on a weekday, when most are shut, and a working dairy or ham house teaches more.
As of September 2026
Cooking class in Parma
Worth €89 if making pasta is the souvenir you want. Choose the old-town class for Parma's own tortelli d'erbetta and no transfer; choose Calestano for a longer meal in the hills. If you only want to eat, a trattoria plate costs €11.
As of September 2026
Black truffle hunting at Fragno
Worth €185 if a hunt with dogs is the experience you want and you can get to Berceto. For the Fragno truffle itself, go to Calestano on a fair Sunday and eat it: cheaper, and the real local product.
As of September 2026
November Porc
Worth a Sunday if you have a car and like a loud village fair with free boiled pork at 3:30 p.m. Skip it if you want a quiet culatello tasting: book a cellar or a restaurant in the Bassa instead.
As of September 2026
Fiera Nazionale del Tartufo Nero di Fragno
Worth a Sunday drive if you want to buy truffle from the people who dug it, at a price fixed that morning. Not worth a special trip from far away: it is a village fair, and the 2026 programme is still unpublished.
As of September 2026
Christmas in Parma
Worth it for a food-first December weekend: anolini, cured meats and a city without summer crowds. Not worth a trip for the markets alone, which are small and mostly Sunday-only.
As of September 2026
Caseifici Aperti (Open Dairies)
Worth it if your dates happen to match: the extras (wheel openings, lunches, free tastings at some dairies) are real. Do not plan a trip around it. A booked dairy visit on any other morning shows you the same cheesemaking.
As of September 2026
Labirinto della Masone
Worth it if you have a car, a dry day and an interest in odd, personal art collections. Skip it if you are relying on public transport or you just want a maze: €20 is a lot for 45 minutes among bamboo.
As of September 2026
Busseto and Verdi's country
Worth a day if you care about Verdi or opera: €15 buys three sites that tell his story in order. For everyone else, Busseto is a pleasant small town but not worth an hour's train each way on its own.
As of September 2026
Bologna
Worth a half or full day if you have three or more days in Parma: it is cheap and fast. On a one- or two-day Parma visit, skip it; Bologna deserves its own stay, and Parma gets squeezed.
As of September 2026
Reggia di Colorno
Worth a morning if Parma's ducal history interests you: the train is cheap and the garden is free. It is not a Versailles, whatever the posters say, and in winter the visiting options shrink.
As of September 2026
Rocca Meli Lupi, Soragna
Worth it for the gilded rooms and the rare sense of a castle still in family hands, if you can make a weekend tour time. At €15 for a guided tour in Italian, first-timers with one castle slot should pick Torrechiara or Fontanellato.
As of September 2026
Cremona
Worth a day for music lovers, especially if you time it for a violin audition. For everyone else it is a handsome cathedral square an awkward train ride away; Modena gives more for the same effort.
As of September 2026
The Bassa and the Po
Worth it for food-minded visitors with a car and a lunch booking: this is where culatello comes from, and it tastes best here. Without a car, or if cured meat is not your thing, the flat landscape alone does not justify the drive.
As of September 2026
Salsomaggiore Terme
Worth it for adults who want a spa day in a restored 1923 Art Deco palace, and the rooftop pools are new. Skip it with children under 14, or if you only want to look at the building: we found no way in without spa entry.
As of September 2026
Correggio and Parmigianino walk
Worth it for anyone who cares about Renaissance painting: the two domes alone justify the morning, and they are free. Casual visitors should do the historic centre loop instead, which passes the same churches; until spring 2027 this walk is missing its best small room.
As of September 2026
Music walk: Verdi, Toscanini, Paganini
Worth it for opera and music lovers, who get three museums and a theater tour for under €20. For anyone else, the museums are small and the cemetery is a long detour; see the Regio from outside and do the historic centre loop.
As of September 2026
Strada Farini
The best street in Parma for an evening out, and a fine base if you want to walk home from the bar in 3 minutes. If you need early nights, sleep in the Duomo quarter 8 minutes away and come here for aperitivo.
As of September 2026
Around Parma Station
The right base if you are taking a train most days: the platforms are minutes away and the station hotels include breakfast. For a Parma-only stay, sleep in the centre and take a taxi from the station once.
As of September 2026
The Parma Hills
The best base for a Food Valley trip by car: rooms were cheaper than central Parma on the date we checked, breakfast was included, and the ham houses and Torrechiara are minutes away. Without a car, do not stay here.
As of September 2026
Grand Hotel de la Ville
Worth it if you arrive by car and want five-star service without ZTL stress: breakfast is included and €202 on a November weeknight is fair. If you are on foot and came for the old town, a central four-star puts you 10 minutes closer for less.
As of September 2026
NH Parma
The right hotel if your plan is Modena, Bologna, Cremona or the Busseto line by train: breakfast is included and the platforms are 2 minutes away. For a city-only stay, the same money buys a room 10 minutes closer to the Duomo.
As of September 2026
Starhotels Du Parc
Good value on a quiet night for drivers who want a proper four-star and a €15 garage outside the ZTL. At €192 room only on a busy date, the central hotels are the better buy.
As of September 2026
Hotel Daniel
Worth it for drivers who want free parking and a proper Parma dinner without moving the car. If you are on foot, a 24-minute walk each way to Piazza Garibaldi is too high a price for a three-star.
As of September 2026
Grand Hotel di Parma (formerly Park Hotel Pacchiosi)
A handsome garden five-star with a garage and no ZTL worries, but €394 room only on a busy October night is a lot for a hotel 17 minutes from Piazza Garibaldi. Book it on a quieter date, around €250, if you arrive by car.
As of September 2026
Best Western Plus Hotel Farnese
The best-value four-star for a Food Valley trip by car: free parking, fast ring-road access and a pool in summer. For a city break on foot it is a skip, because every sight is 25 to 30 minutes' walk away.
As of September 2026
Inkiostro
Worth €130–€180 if you want a starred, internationally minded tasting menu. If your trip is about Parma's own food, the same money buys Antica Corte Pallavicina's culatello menu or four trattoria dinners.
As of September 2026
Ristorante Parizzi
Worth it for the €55 Parma menu if you want the classics in a smart room in the center. Do not book expecting the starred Parizzi of old: the family has deliberately left fine dining.
As of September 2026
Gallo d'Oro
Worth booking if you want a central, well-reviewed trattoria a minute from Piazza Garibaldi and do not mind ordering without prices online. If you want to know the bill in advance, Trattoria del Tribunale publishes its menu.
As of September 2026
Pepèn
Worth a detour if you want to taste Parma's own street food, the carciofa and raw horse panino. Expect a small bill and no seat; call or check in person, because hours and prices are not published.
As of September 2026
Pesto di cavallo
Worth ordering if you eat steak tartare and have no objection to horse: it is lean, clean-tasting and €12. If horse meat bothers you, nothing about Parma's version will change your mind, so skip it without guilt.
As of September 2026
Violetta di Parma
Worth buying only if you want Marie Louise's scent as a souvenir. It is not a Parma food experience, and we could not verify prices or who still sells candied violets, so do not cross town for either.
As of September 2026
Skip it 5
Camera di San Paolo
Closed until an expected spring 2027 reopening, so there is nothing to visit this autumn or winter. See Correggio in the Duomo and San Giovanni instead, and come back after the restoration.
As of September 2026
Cibus
Unless you work in the food trade, you cannot and need not go. The only reason a visitor should know the Cibus dates is to avoid booking Parma hotels that week by accident.
As of September 2026
Fidenza Village
Skip it unless shopping is the purpose of your day. It is a well-run outlet like many others, awkward without a car, and the only thing it has that is local is a Parma perfume brand. If you are in Fidenza, see the cathedral instead.
As of September 2026
Angiol d'Or
Skip it for a full dinner: anolini are €18 here against €13–€14 at Tribunale, Brisla and Ai Due Platani, and the Michelin Guide does not list it. The only case for booking is a summer dinner at a table out on the piazza, facing the Baptistery.
As of September 2026
Caffè Cavour
Skip it as a destination: it is a pleasant modern café-bar, not a historic one, and the only menu it publishes dates from December 2023. Use it for a quick coffee standing at the bar, where it costs €1.30.
As of September 2026
