Parma on a budget

Parma's best art costs nothing. The Duomo, with Correggio's Assumption dome, is free and open from 7:45 a.m. to 7:20 p.m. every day. So are the Correggio dome in San Giovanni Evangelista, Parmigianino's arch in the Steccata, and the Parco Ducale. The big paid museum, the Pilotta, drops from €18 to €10 after 5 p.m., and to nothing on the first Sunday of the month.
Eating well is cheap too, if you pick the right places. Menus we read show tortelli at €10–€12 a plate and torta fritta at €0.40 a piece. The one thing we could not find is a Parma bar publishing a price for an aperitivo buffet, so we do not promise one. All prices below were checked on September 29, 2026, unless another date is given.

Two cautions. The Pilotta's official average visit is about 3 hours, so the €10 evening ticket, from 5 p.m. with the last entry at 6 p.m., buys you at most two hours: enough for the Teatro Farnese and the Galleria's highlights. And the city pass includes the Camera di San Paolo, closed for restoration until spring 2027, so at €4 a museum it only pays off if you visit four.
Cheap meals from real menus
- I Tri Siochett, a Michelin Bib Gourmand trattoria 5.6 km from the centre: torta fritta at €0.40 a piece, salumi €9, tortelli €10, anolini €14, cover €2. Closed Monday; Sunday lunch only.
- Osteria dei Mascalzoni at lunch (December 2025 menu): pasta €10, tortelli €12, mains €10–€12, cover €1. Dinner primi are €14.
- Trattoria del Tribunale, Vicolo Politi: torta fritta €4.50, tortelli di erbetta €11, anolini in brodo €13.
- Brisla, another Bib Gourmand, on Strada Farini: anolini €14, mains from €13.
For the evening, a glass of wine at Enoteca Fontana is €2–€3 in 2026 reviews, against about €7 at Tabarro across the street. Caffè Cavour's December 2023 menu lists a spritz at €6 at the bar and €7 at a table. Standing is cheaper everywhere: an espresso there is €1.30 at the bar and €2 seated.
Sleeping cheaply, and the city tax
The cheapest central hotel we priced was Hotel Button, 2 minutes from Piazza Garibaldi: an economy double at €78 for November 11 and €118 for October 14, 2026, with free cancellation. Breakfast is €9 a person. With a car, La Maestà in Langhirano was €79 with breakfast on October 14, but you pay for fuel and parking instead.
Parma charges a city tax (imposta di soggiorno) per adult per night. Hotels quote €5 at five-stars and €4 at four-stars (maximum five nights), and Booking.com's tax lines imply about €2.50 at three-stars. Under-18s are exempt. The city's own table was unreachable when we checked, so treat these as hotel figures. November is cheaper than October: see the best time to visit.
Getting around and the Food Valley for less
Walk. The centre is 20 minutes end to end. If you need a bus, a TEP ticket is €2 for 80 minutes, and a day ticket €6.30. A bike from the station Cicletteria is €12 for 24 hours. Regional train fares are fixed and do not rise on the day: Colorno €2.70, Modena €6.30, Bologna €8.50.
The biggest single saving is the dairy. A Parmigiano dairy visit booked direct at Caseificio Ugolotti costs €23; the most popular van tour that includes a dairy costs €135. Ugolotti's shop sells 12-month Parmigiano at €19.90 a kilo. See the Food Valley without a car.

Total: about €29 before dinner and a bed, with Correggio's two domes, Parmigianino, the Teatro Farnese and a plate of tortelli in it.

When is the Pilotta free?
On the first Sunday of every month (October 4, November 1 and December 6, 2026), and on a few national days such as November 4. Under-18s are always free, 18 to 24-year-olds pay €2, and everyone pays €10 from 5 p.m.
How much is the tourist tax in Parma?
