Food Valley tour or do it yourself?

All prices are per day, checked September 29, 2026. The hire car is the cheapest 24-hour rate Kayak showed for October 14 to 15, 2026 (an Opel Corsa or similar, from a desk on Via La Spezia). Fuel is 60 km at 7 liters per 100 km, our deliberately cautious assumption for a small petrol car, at the regional average of €2.122 a liter. The route from a rental desk to Ugolotti, on to Langhirano and back uses no motorway, so there are no tolls.

Use the Europcar desk on Strada dei Mercati instead (€46 for a Fiat 500 on the same search) and the DIY totals rise by €7. Add a third person and the gap passes €200, because the car cost is shared and the tour is not.

The three-stop version with balsamic in Modena changes the picture less than you might expect. ParmaLook charges €183 per person. Doing it yourself means about 187 km and 2 hours 38 minutes of driving, tolls of €3.60 each way between Parma and Modena, and about €28 of fuel. Acetaia Malpighi's tour is free. That makes €123 for one person and €172 for two, against €183 and €366.

Cheese is made in the early morning. Ugolotti's own description says its 9 a.m. visit shows the milk heated and the curd broken, its second slot the wheels lifted out, and its last slot empty rooms. The visit lasts 1 hour 30 minutes.

Conti's booking calendar, read on September 29, 2026, lists its English tour at 10:30 a.m. on every October date it offers, and not every day: October 14, for example, had no slot. Langhirano is 25 km and about 30 minutes from Ugolotti. So you cannot see cheese made at 9 a.m. and reach Conti for 10:30. Older guides, including Visit Emilia's listing, give Conti's time as 11:30 a.m.; the live calendar says otherwise.

Your realistic options:

• Two mornings. Ugolotti at 9 a.m. one day, Conti at 10:30 a.m. another, with Torrechiara after it. The best version, but two days of car or one long hire.
• Ham first, cheese second. Conti at 10:30 a.m., then Ugolotti's 12:30 p.m. slot and lunch in its restaurant. You see the aging rooms but no cheesemakers at work.
• The tour. ParmaLook starts at 8:30, 9:30 or 10 a.m. and arranges both stops for you.

• The wine. Both direct visits end with a tasting that includes wine. Whoever drives should skip it. On the tour, nobody has to.
• Getting to the car. Kayak listed no rental desk at Parma station. Europcar at Strada dei Mercati 3 is 1.7 km, about 22 minutes on foot; the cheapest desk, on Via La Spezia, is 5 km away by road. The tour van leaves from NH Parma, 2 minutes from the platforms.
• Insurance and deposit. A €39 base rate rarely includes a low excess. Check before you compare.
• Cancellation. Conti gives no refunds, only a new date. Ugolotti refunds up to 7 days ahead. The tour cancels free up to 24 hours ahead.
• The ZTL. None of the route enters Parma's camera zone, but a hotel pickup in the center can. Read do you need a car in Parma? first.

Do it yourself if you are two or more, one of you is happy to drive and not drink, and you have two mornings, or you accept seeing the dairy after production. You also get to shop at the dairy without a van waiting: Ugolotti sells 24-month Parmigiano at €22.90 per kg in 1 kg pieces. Our Food Valley in 2 days spreads the visits sensibly.

Book the tour if you are travelling alone, have no licence or no wish to drive, or only have one morning. The €38 saving for a solo traveller does not buy much against a clash of time slots and a 22-minute walk to the car.

A middle way without a car: Ugolotti is inside Parma's city limits, about 5 km from Piazza Garibaldi.
