Best time to visit Parma

Averages for the University of Parma weather station, 1991–2020, as tabulated on Italian Wikipedia. The Italian Meteorological Society's own 1991–2020 figures for the city station (Piazzale Santa Croce) give an annual mean of 14.9°C and 792.6 mm of rain, consistent with this table. The rainfall and rain-day columns may use an older base period.

Two notes. Summer heat in the Po plain is humid, and the record, 40.4°C on August 25, 2023, is recent. And fog, the old winter trademark of the plain, has largely left the city since the 1990s; it now settles mainly on the low country toward the Po. If you drive to the Bassa on a winter morning, expect it and allow extra time.

• Early September: the Festival del Prosciutto in Langhirano (September 4–6 in 2026), with ham houses opening their doors for €2 booked tours. The 2027 dates are not announced; the organizers say the first two weekends of September.
• October: Festival Verdi, October 1–25, 2026, at the Teatro Regio and in Busseto. The Pilotta and state museums are free on the first Sunday, October 4. Cibus Tec, a food-technology trade fair, fills the Fiere di Parma from October 27 to 30, 2026.
• Late October and November: the Fragno black truffle fair on Sundays October 18, 25, November 1 and 8, 2026, in Calestano; November Porc across four Bassa villages on the November weekends (€3 entry per stop).

Hotel rates reflect the demand. The same central four-star cost €151 on October 14 and €114 on November 11, 2026 on Booking.com; three-stars were €118–€146 and €78–€122. See where to stay.

March still feels like late winter, with highs of 15.5°C (60°F). April and May are mild and green but rainy, about 9 wet days a month. The Food Museums (ham, salame, Parmigiano, tomato, pasta, wine) reopen for weekends on March 1. The Consortium's Caseifici Aperti open-dairy weekend ran on May 23–24 in 2026; the next edition had not been announced on September 29, 2026. The Festa del Culatello in Polesine Zibello ran from May 29 to June 2 in 2026.

Cibus, the big food trade fair, returns to Fiere di Parma on May 4–6, 2027. It is for trade visitors only. We have no hotel-price data for fair weeks, but check rates before you fix dates around it.

August is hot and quiet. August 15, Ferragosto, is a national holiday. What we could confirm:

• TEP switches to its estivissimo timetable, normally about three weeks in August. The airport bus drops from every 30 minutes to every hour.
• Toscanini's birthplace closes at 2 p.m. on July and August weekends; the Museo Glauco Lombardi closes at 2 p.m. on Sundays in July and August.
• Restaurants rarely publish their holidays. None of the 22 restaurants and bars we checked lists an August closure on its website. One directory says Osteria del 36 closes from mid-July to about August 20, which the osteria has not confirmed. Book, or phone, before you plan a dinner.

The big state sights keep normal hours: the Pilotta is open Tuesday to Sunday and the Duomo daily. If you come in August, go early, eat late and use the Parco Ducale's shade.

Highs of 7–10°C (44–50°F) and frosty nights. The upside is prices and a dairy calendar that never stops: the Parmigiano Reggiano Consortium says its dairies take visitors 365 days a year, although Caseificio Ugolotti suspends its tours in December. The downside is closures:

• Most Food Museums close from December 9 to the end of February, except for groups.
• The Labirinto della Masone closed from January 7 to February 6 in 2026; it has not announced a 2027 break.
• Christmas: the Piazza Ghiaia market runs on November 29 and December 6, 7, 8, 13 and 20, 2026. See Christmas in Parma for what shuts on December 25 and 26.
• January 13, the feast of Sant'Ilario, is Parma's own city holiday.
