Parma is one of the easiest day trips in northern Italy. From Bologna the fast regional takes 58 minutes and costs €8.50; the Frecciarossa is no faster on this line. From Milan a Frecciarossa does it in 51 to 55 minutes, and a regional in about 1 hour 40 minutes for €12.35. Parma station is 10 minutes' walk (730 m) from the Pilotta and 15 from the Duomo, so you need no taxi and no bus.
With eight hours on the ground you can see the center properly: the Teatro Farnese and the Galleria in the Pilotta, Correggio's two domes, the Baptistery and the Steccata, plus a trattoria lunch and a glass of Malvasia before the train. You cannot add the Food Valley; dairies work only in the early morning, before your train arrives. Do not go on a Monday, when the Pilotta is closed. From Bologna the day costs about €154 for two.

These times come from Trenitalia's planner for Wednesday, October 7 and Sunday, October 11, 2026. Regional fares are fixed; Frecciarossa fares change with demand, so the ones below are only what we saw.

From Bologna the fast regionals leave at 33 minutes past most hours and take 58 minutes; slower ones at 50 past take 1 hour 8 minutes or more for the same €8.50, so read the arrival time. Coming back, the fast ones leave Parma at 27 minutes past. The 8:33 a.m. also ran on the Sunday. Trenitalia sometimes offers a Frecciarossa-plus-"Parmalink" bus combination from Milan for €33.90 to €49; it takes longer than the direct train. Ignore it.
Morning: straight to the Pilotta
- 9:31 a.m. (from Bologna) or 8:41 a.m. (Milan Frecciarossa). Walk 10 minutes south to the Palazzo della Pilotta.
- 9:45 a.m. Palazzo della Pilotta, €18. One ticket for five museums; it opens at 9 a.m. Start with the Teatro Farnese, the wooden theater of 1618 rebuilt after the 1944 bombing, then the Galleria Nazionale for Leonardo's Scapigliata, Correggio and Parmigianino. Correggio's Lamentation is in Dresden until January 10, 2027. Allow two hours. (The €10 ticket from 5 p.m. does not suit a day trip: it would leave you racing for the train.)
- 11:50 a.m. Walk 9 minutes to Piazza Garibaldi. Between September 19 and October 25, 2026, a Verdi aria plays free from the arcade of the Teatro Regio at 1 p.m. every day, part of the Festival Verdi.
Milan travelers arriving at 8:41 a.m. have an extra hour: start at the Duomo, which opens at 7:45 a.m., and do the Pilotta second.
12:15 p.m.: tortelli at Osteria dei Mascalzoni
Osteria dei Mascalzoni, 3 minutes from Piazza Garibaldi, is open every day and has the best-value central lunch we could verify: tortelli d'erbetta €12, other pasta €10, mains €10 to €12, cover €1. Tortelli and a main each is €46 for two before drinks. Phone +39 0521 281809; an email does not confirm a table.
On a Sunday, Mascalzoni serves only lunch, which is all you need. If it is full, Trattoria dei Corrieri serves from noon to midnight every day, at about €30 a head on TheFork.
Afternoon: the Duomo quarter
- 1:45 p.m. Parma Cathedral. Free, open all day with no lunch break. Correggio's Assumption in the dome, Antelami's Deposition of 1178, the crypt. Forty minutes.
- 2:30 p.m. Baptistery and Diocesan Museum. €12 each, open daily 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The painted dome and Antelami's Months. An hour.
- 3:30 p.m. San Giovanni Evangelista. Free, reopened at 3 p.m. after its lunch closure: Correggio's first dome. Thirty minutes.
- 4:15 p.m. Santa Maria della Steccata. 500 m away, free, listed as open from 3 p.m. Parmigianino's arch. Twenty minutes.
5:30 p.m.: a glass, then the train
Tabarro, Strada Farini 5/b, opens at 5:30 p.m. Monday to Saturday. A June 2026 review paid €14 for two glasses. On Sunday, when Tabarro is closed, try Enoteca Fontana further down the street, reported at €2 to €3 a glass but with no published hours. Our aperitivo walk maps the three bars.
Piazza Garibaldi to the station is 1.2 km, 16 minutes on foot. For the 6:27 p.m. to Bologna, leave the bar by 6:05 p.m. For Milan, the 6:15 p.m. Frecciarossa means leaving at 5:55 p.m.; the 7:02 p.m. regional (€12.35) buys another hour on Strada Farini. Staying for dinner is hard work: most Parma kitchens open at 7:30 p.m., and the later trains to Bologna we saw were the 8:27 p.m. regional (arriving 9:25 p.m.) and the 8:43 p.m. Frecciarossa (9:42 p.m., €14.90).

With the Frecciarossa from Milan at the Wednesday fares we saw (€24.90 out, €27.50 back), trains cost €104.80 for two and the day about €225. Coffee, water and wine at lunch are extra. Under-18s enter the Pilotta free and 18 to 24-year-olds pay €2.
Should you take a tour from Bologna instead?
Many "Parma food tours from Bologna" never reach Parma: of the listings checked for this site, most visit a dairy and a balsamic maker near Bologna, Modena or Reggio Emilia. What should I skip on a day trip to Parma?

How far is Parma station from the sights?
About 10 minutes' walk to the Pilotta, 15 to the Duomo and 16 to Piazza Garibaldi. There is no need for a bus or taxi.
