Busseto and Verdi's country

The theater on Piazza Verdi was built between 1856 and 1868 inside the old castle and inaugurated on August 15, 1868. It holds 300 people. Verdi contributed money but did not attend the opening. Visits are guided and short, and they leave every half hour: 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., Tuesday to Sunday. It is closed on Mondays, except June 1, December 7 and December 28, 2026. A single ticket is €6, or €5 for ages 6 to 18 and families of two adults with two or more children.

Antonio Barezzi was the Busseto merchant who spotted Verdi's talent, hired him to teach his daughter Margherita, who became Verdi's first wife, and funded his studies in Milan. In the salone of his house the young Verdi gave his first public performance, in February 1830. The museum keeps Verdi's piano, portraits of Barezzi and a charcoal drawing of the young composer, and letters, including the 1847 dedication of Macbeth to Barezzi, his father-in-law.

Visits are guided: Tuesday to Sunday at 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and noon; in the afternoon at 3 p.m. Tuesday to Friday and at 2:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. at weekends. A single ticket is €8. It is about 250 m from the theater, so the two fit in one morning.

Verdi was born in 1813 in a modest house at Roncole, now called Roncole Verdi. The house is a small museum. From April 1 to October 31, 2026 it opens Tuesday to Sunday, 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.; last entry is 30 minutes before each close. Tickets are €6. The Castelli del Ducato circuit publishes these hours only to October 31; if you go in winter, call the Busseto tourist office on +39 0524 92487 first.

Roncole is 4.9 km from Busseto, eight minutes by car. Without a car, see the bus trick below.

Bought separately the three cost €20, so the €15 ticket saves €5 even if you are not sure you will reach Roncole. Under-5s are free. The Busseto tourist office is at Piazza Verdi 10. The Museo Nazionale Giuseppe Verdi in Villa Pallavicino is a separate museum; its website blocked our checks, so we cannot confirm its 2026 hours or prices.

Train: €4.50 each way on regional trains. On weekdays there is one direct train, the 9:27 a.m. from Parma, arriving at 9:59 a.m. Other departures change at Fidenza; some of the Fidenza to Busseto legs are replacement buses, which Trenitalia sells on the same ticket. On Sundays the service is thin: 9 a.m. and 12:33 p.m. out, 5:53 p.m. and 7:53 p.m. back. Busseto station is 1 km, about 13 minutes on foot, from the theater. Taxi: Radio Taxi Parma charges a fixed €55 one way by day from Parma to Busseto (Verdi's birthplace), tolls included.

A weekday plan without a car (Tuesday to Saturday):

1. 9:27 a.m. train from Parma, arrive 9:59 a.m.
2. Teatro Verdi and Casa Barezzi in the morning; lunch in town.
3. TEP bus line 2120 from Busseto (via Leoncavallo) at 1:55 p.m., at Roncole at 2 p.m.
4. The birthplace from 2:30 p.m.
5. Back on line 2120 from Roncole at 6:20 p.m. to Busseto (6:38 p.m.), then the 6:50 p.m. train to Parma, arriving 7:25 p.m.

The same bus line also runs straight from Parma station to Roncole and Busseto (12:50 p.m. on weekdays, arriving Busseto 1:55 p.m.), but it is slower and dearer than the train at €5.60.

Car: 42.4 km (26 miles), about 45 minutes. A car lets you add the Rocca di Soragna or the culatello country of the Bassa, both close by.

Sant'Agata is about 5 km from Busseto, across the provincial border in Piacenza province. After a long inheritance dispute the villa closed to visitors in 2022, and the state completed its expropriation in December 2024. The Ministry of Economy approved €6.5 million for restoration in four phases. As of September 13, 2026, Il Post reported that only €375,000 of emergency roof repairs had been done in 2025, that the main works had not started, and that the garden fences and trees were in poor shape. The Ministry of Culture's listing shows the villa closed every day.

You can drive past the gates, but there is nothing to visit. Put the time into Roncole instead.
