Torrechiara Castle

The reason to come is the Camera d'Oro, the Golden Room, attributed to the painter Benedetto Bembo. Rossi had it decorated to celebrate his love affair with Bianca Pellegrini and, at the same time, his power: the frescoes show the castles of his fief, one by one. It is the room people photograph, and it is small, so on a busy weekend you may wait at the door.

The other rooms carry grotesque frescoes by Cesare Baglione, the same painter whose work you can see at Soragna. The castle circuit calls Torrechiara the fortress with the frescoed heart, and for once the slogan is fair. Rooms are largely empty of furniture: the walls and ceilings are the show.

Film fans may know the silhouette. The castle was a location for Ladyhawke, according to the Castelli del Ducato circuit. From the walls you look down on vineyards and the valley road, which is why the approach on foot from the village square is worth doing rather than driving to the top.

• Full ticket: €8. Adult groups of 10 to 30: €6 each.
• Ages 18 to 24: €2. A parent visiting with a child under 25 pays €6, plus €2 for the child.
• Free: under 18, the usual Ministry of Culture categories, and everyone on the first Sunday of the month.
• Combined ticket: €25 covers the Pilotta, the Spezieria of San Giovanni, Torrechiara and the Roman site of Veleia. It only pays if you do the €18 Pilotta ticket anyway.

The castle opens on four 2026 Mondays: April 6, June 1, November 2 and December 7, and closes on a later weekday instead (April 7, June 3, November 5 and December 9). Booking is not required, but the castle strongly recommends it for weekends and holidays.

TEP line 2670 runs Parma, Corcagnano, Torrechiara, Langhirano. On top of it, from Monday to Saturday the city line 12 carries on to Langhirano once an hour. It leaves Parma station (urban stops, level -2) at 21 minutes past the hour from 7:21 a.m. to 7:21 p.m., stops at barriera Farini nine minutes later and reaches Torrechiara piazza Leoni at 57 past: 36 minutes. Coming back, it leaves piazza Leoni at 30 past the hour and reaches Parma station 40 minutes later.

A single ticket is €4. Drivers no longer sell tickets: tap a contactless card on the green validator, use the Teseo TEP app, or buy at a tobacconist. From piazza Leoni it is about 700 m, uphill, to the castle gate.

Sundays and holidays are the problem. There are four buses from Parma station: 10:35 a.m., 12:05 p.m., 1:45 p.m. and 7 p.m. Back from Torrechiara they leave at 10:07 a.m., 11:36 a.m., 1:07 p.m. and 6:26 p.m. With the castle open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., the only workable pair is out at 12:05 p.m. and back at 6:26 p.m., with nearly an hour and a half to kill after closing. It is 19.8 km (12 miles) from Piazza Garibaldi, about 30 minutes, heading south on the road to Langhirano. A car makes sense if you want to chain castles. Torrechiara is on the south side of the city and the moated Rocca Sanvitale and Soragna are on the north-west side, so the three together mean a lot of ring road. Our castles by car itinerary puts Torrechiara first because of its 3 p.m. weekday close. Without a car or a bus, Radio Taxi Parma charges a fixed €30 one way by day from Parma to Torrechiara.

The same bus continues eight minutes to Langhirano, the ham capital. The Museo del Prosciutto di Parma is in the former cattle market on Via Bocchialini. From March 1 to December 8 it opens Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; on weekdays it opens only for booked guided visits. Tickets are €5, or €4 for weekend visitors who show a Torrechiara castle ticket. A grissino wrapped in Prosciutto di Parma costs €3 extra.

That weekend discount is the clue: Saturday is the day that works for both, by bus, with the hourly service. Castle at 11 a.m., museum after lunch. • Do not arrive on a weekday after 2:30 p.m. That is last entry. A late lunch in Langhirano first and the castle second will not work.
• Do not buy a coach tour just for Torrechiara. The weekday bus costs €4 each way and runs every hour.
• Skip the €25 combined ticket unless you are also doing the Pilotta and the Spezieria.
• First Sunday of the month is free, which also makes it the busiest day, and the Sunday bus is thin. Pick a different day unless you are driving.
