Prosciutto house visit in Langhirano

€26 direct, €87 by van tour English tour at 10:30 a.m. Car or taxi only

Langhirano, in the Parma valley south of the city, is where the hams hang. The Prosciutto di Parma production zone runs up these hills, and the curing houses line the road from Parma. A visit shows you raw legs under salt, resting rooms and the cellars where thousands of hams age for 14 months or more.

The house that sells tickets directly is Salumificio Conti. Its English tour costs €26, starts at 10:30 a.m. and lasts 75 minutes with a tasting. The catch: Conti says you can come only by car or taxi. The alternative is a van tour from Parma at €87.

Salumificio Conti: what the €26 includes

  • The route: raw legs covered in salt, the resting rooms, the pre-aging rooms, then the cellars downstairs. Conti says you will see one or two live steps; at weekends none are running, though you still walk through every stage.
  • The tasting: Prosciutto di Parma aged 24 months, "dolce culatta" and "fiocco di prosciutto", with breadsticks, wine and water.
  • Timing: 60 to 75 minutes in total. Arrive a few minutes early; late arrivals join the group mid-tour.
  • Group tour: other visitors may be with you. Private tours and groups over 15 by arrangement (+39 0521 357020, [email protected]).
  • Refunds: none, but you can reschedule by email.
  • Children are welcome, but it is a working factory; no smoking, eating or drinking inside.

Conti's booking calendar, read September 29, 2026, lists one English slot, 10:30 a.m., on October 6, 7, 8, 10, 15, 16, 20, 21, 22, 24 and 27 to 31, and nothing on other days. Visit Emilia's listing still says daily at 11:30 a.m.; the live calendar is what you can book. The price and duration are from the same page.

The van tour visits a family-run ham house in the province and serves 24-month ham with bread and wine; tips are included. For two people the direct visit saves €122 on the ham-only tour; set that against the cost of a hire car or taxi. Langhirano is not on Radio Taxi Parma's fixed-fare list; its fixed daytime fare to Torrechiara, 6 km short of Langhirano, is €30, so ask for a quote before relying on one. If you are carless, the tour is simply the easier option. See the Food Valley without a car.

The Prosciutto Museum

The Museo del Prosciutto di Parma is in the restored 1928 Foro Boario cattle market at Via Bocchialini 7, Langhirano. It covers pig breeds, the history of salt and the process from pig to ham.

  • March 1 to December 8: Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Weekdays only by booked guided visit, with a supplement for groups of one to five.
  • December to February: closed except for booked groups.
  • €5; €4 over-65s, groups, and Torrechiara Castle visitors at weekends; family ticket €10. A breadstick with Prosciutto di Parma is €3.

So a weekday trip means ham house but no museum; a weekend trip means museum but no live production at Conti. Pick your priority.

What to combine it with

Torrechiara Castle stands above the same valley road, and the museum gives a reduced ticket to its weekend visitors. Conti at 10:30 a.m., lunch, then the castle makes a full day by car. A Parmigiano dairy does not fit the same morning: Ugolotti's cheesemaking visit starts at 9 a.m. and ends at 10:30, 30 minutes' drive away. Do the dairy on another morning, or take its 12:30 p.m. slot after Conti. The Parma Hills page covers where to stay if you want to base yourself here.

In early September the town holds the Festival del Prosciutto, when ham houses open their doors for "Finestre Aperte" visits.
