Compare Parma on the same night: Hotel Button, the cheapest central hotel we checked, was €118 room only plus €5 tax and €18 of breakfast for two, so about €141. Hotel Stendhal came to about €189 with breakfast and tax.

What you add back is the car. The cheapest 24-hour hire on Kayak for October 14 to 15, 2026 was €39, from a desk on Via La Spezia; Europcar at Strada dei Mercati 3 started at €46, and there is no rental desk at the station. The hills are outside every restricted zone; the problem starts when you drive into the city. Parma's limited traffic zone is enforced by cameras 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. every day, and some bus lanes 24 hours. You have three sensible options:

1. Park at the edge and walk. Covered public car parks such as Goito and Toschi charge €16 per 24 hours, according to central hotels.
2. Buy the ZTL day pass. Infomobility's tourist leaflet lists the GZ pass at €10 for the whole day, parking included, or the BZ at €5 for 2 hours. Buy it in the Tap&Park app or at a meter by the gates before you enter. It does not open the isole ambientali around the Duomo and Strada Farini.
3. Park and ride. Infomobility maps park-and-ride car parks at the city edge, including one labelled Sud and one on Via Traversetolo to the south-east. All ten are free and open 24 hours, some with shared bikes or scooters and a TEP shuttle into town.

If you slip through a gate without a pass, a €15 ROZ ticket bought by 11:59 p.m. the next day regularizes it. Everything else is in our ZTL and parking guide.

Choose by what you will do most. For ham houses and the castle, base yourself in Langhirano or Torrechiara: both are on the same valley road, about 6 km (11 minutes) apart by car. The price is the longest drive into Parma, 30 to 34 minutes each way.

If you want to split days between the hills and the city, Collecchio (about 16 minutes from Parma station) or Sala Baganza (about 20 minutes) are close enough for an evening in town and a drive back. Felino, at about 23 minutes, sits between the two and is the natural stop for the salami. Wherever you stay, plan dinner near your bed on the nights you drink wine.

Do not base yourself here without one. TEP runs extra-urban buses into the valleys, including to Langhirano, but a bus timetable does not fit a 9 a.m. dairy visit, a castle and a dinner in town. If you arrive by train, stay in Parma and read the Food Valley without a car, or compare the cost of a Food Valley day tour.

Couples and families with a rental car on a two- or three-day food trip: a ham house in the morning, Torrechiara in the afternoon, dinner in a country trattoria, with no ZTL anywhere near your bed. Walkers and cyclists who want the hills themselves. Anyone who sleeps badly in a city.

It suits less well a first-time visitor whose priority is the Duomo, the Pilotta and an opera: you will drive in and out every day, and the evening passeggiata on Piazza Garibaldi ends with a 30-minute drive.
