Coming back the same afternoon: 4:15 p.m. (change at Piadena, at Parma 5:49 p.m.), 5:30 p.m. (change at Piadena, 6:49 p.m.) or 6:27 p.m. (change at Fidenza, 7:25 p.m.). Some Cremona to Fidenza runs are buses sold as part of the rail ticket, and they take longer. On Sundays there is no direct train; the 8:12 a.m. via Piadena arrives at 9:28 a.m.

The direct 9:27 a.m. train also stops at Busseto, so a Verdi morning and a Cremona afternoon are possible on the same ticket line.

The museum on Piazza Marconi tells the story of the Cremonese violin makers, with historic instruments from its collections. It opens Tuesday to Friday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; it is closed on Mondays.

• Tickets: €14 full, €11 for under-19s, over-65s and some card holders. Under-11s free.

The audition is the thing to plan around. Hearing a centuries-old Cremonese instrument in the auditorium turns a good museum into a memorable one. Check the calendar before you pick your day.

Cremona is not only a museum of old violins. UNESCO added traditional violin craftsmanship in Cremona to its list of intangible cultural heritage in 2012. Its description is worth knowing before you peer into a workshop window: each instrument is made by hand from more than 70 pieces of wood, shaped and assembled around an inner mold, every part from a specific, naturally seasoned wood, and a maker produces three to six instruments a year. The local makers are organized in associations such as the Consorzio Liutai Antonio Stradivari.

That output rate explains the prices of new Cremonese instruments and why workshops are not showrooms. If you want to visit one, ask the museum or the tourist office which makers accept visitors; do not knock on doors. We have not listed individual workshops because we could not confirm which ones open to the public in 2026.

The Torrazzo is the cathedral's bell tower on Piazza del Comune, built as a tower within a tower linked by a staircase. You climb 502 steps to the top terrace. On the way, the Museo Verticale, opened in November 2018, has rooms on the astronomical clock, the measurement of time and astronomy, with a Foucault pendulum. On clear days the view reaches from the Po to the Alps.

• Tuesday to Sunday: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. The €10 single ticket covers the Torrazzo, the Baptistery and the Diocesan Museum.
• Monday: a €5 ticket for the Torrazzo only.

The cathedral, the Baptistery and the town hall share the square, which is the finest part of the city on foot. Piazza del Comune is 1.4 km, 19 minutes, from the station.

2. Walk 19 minutes to Piazza del Comune; climb the Torrazzo before lunch (it closes 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.).
3. Lunch near the square.
4. Museo del Violino in the afternoon, ideally with an audition.
5. 5:30 p.m. or 6:27 p.m. train back to Parma.

If you have one spare day and no special interest in violins, Modena is closer (29 minutes), cheaper to reach, and has more to see for a general visitor. If you are in Parma for the Festival Verdi or an opera night, Cremona makes a natural musical companion day. With a car, you can drive through the Bassa and cross the Po on the way.
