Salsomaggiore Terme

QC publishes prices as "from" figures, because they vary with the date and demand. On September 29, 2026 the list was:

Entry includes the whole wellness circuit, a robe, towel, slippers and an evening aperitif. The spa is open Sunday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., and to midnight on Friday and Saturday. Its rules say one ticket is one entry: you cannot leave and come back. You must leave the pools 30 minutes before closing.

The layout, per QC: saunas, relaxation rooms, massage lounges and a bistro in the historic palace; pools in the former thermal power plant behind it, including three rooftop pools. The total area is about 9,000 square meters.

The Berzieri was started in 1912 by the architect Ugo Giusti with the engineer Giulio Bernardini, interrupted by the First World War and finished from 1919 by Galileo Chini and his ceramic workshop. Look outside for the lion heads, ram and owl heads and the blue lions. Inside, the circuit notes the atrium by Giuseppe Moroni, the double staircase, Chini's frescoes and Moroni's goddess Hygieia.

The facade is free to look at from Piazza Berzieri. For the interior, we found no public visit without spa entry on QC's pages, and the Castelli del Ducato circuit's page still describes the palace as closed for restoration with a €4 visit, which is out of date. Ask at the reception if you only want to see the atrium; do not count on it.

Train, €4.50 each way. Most journeys change at Fidenza: for example the 9:33 a.m. and 10:33 a.m. from Parma reach Salsomaggiore at 10:22 a.m. and 11:22 a.m. One through train, the 12:56 p.m., runs direct in 22 minutes on weekdays and on Sundays. Coming back on a weekday, trains leave Salsomaggiore at 4:25 p.m., 4:59 p.m., 5:59 p.m. and 6:29 p.m. (direct, 21 minutes) and 7:59 p.m. Salsomaggiore station is about 750 m from the Berzieri, 10 minutes on foot.

Bus: TEP line 2205 runs Parma, Fidenza, Salsomaggiore along the Via Emilia. It is slower than the train and the single fare is €4.80.

Car: 36 km (22 miles), about 40 minutes. It is on the way to nothing in particular, but you could combine it with the Romanesque cathedral at Fidenza, covered on our Fidenza page. If you change trains at Fidenza anyway, the cathedral is about 700 m from the station, 10 minutes on foot, so a 40-minute gap between trains is enough for a look at the facade.

• Couples or friends wanting a spa day: yes. Take the 9:33 a.m. train, buy the €68 unlimited entry, and catch the 6:29 p.m. direct train back.
• Families with children under 14: no. They will not be let in.
• Architecture fans without a spa budget: the facade takes 10 minutes and the train takes an hour each way. Not worth a dedicated trip.
• A first visit to Parma of two or three days: skip it. The castles and the dairy visits are better uses of a day.

If a spa day is the goal, book online for a weekend: QC says prices depend on the date and availability.

Tabiano, the smaller spa village a few kilometers away, is linked to Salsomaggiore by TEP line 2225. The hills around both towns are on the Castelli del Ducato circuit, and Salsomaggiore has a waymarked seven-stop loop, SalsoExperience, that starts at the Berzieri and runs past the old salt works to the Stirone park. For a food angle, the valley roads south lead towards the Colli di Parma wineries.
