Copper-lined cauldrons and cheesemakers at work in a Parmigiano Reggiano dairy

Parmigiano Reggiano dairy visit

€18–€25 booked direct Be there by 9 a.m. Nearest dairy 5 km from center

The one thing to know: Parmigiano is made in the morning. Milk goes into the copper vats early, the curd is cut and cooked, and the new wheels are lifted out around mid-morning. A dairy visit at 3 p.m. shows you rooms and aging shelves, not cheesemaking. Book the 9 a.m. slot.

You do not need a tour company. The Consortium's own booking page lists dairies that sell tickets directly, most for €15–€25. The closest to the center, Caseificio Ugolotti, is inside Parma's city limits, runs its tour in English, and cost €23 on September 29, 2026. A van tour that adds a ham house costs €135.

Our pick: Ugolotti, 9 a.m.

  • Timing: the dairy says the 9 a.m. visit shows the first stages: heating the milk, breaking the curd, cooking it. A second slot shows the wheels being lifted out. The last slot of the day shows every room but no cheesemakers at work.
  • Price and options: from €23 with a classic tasting of three ages; add a 24-month prosciutto tasting, or a light lunch. The restaurant serves lunch from noon to 2:30 p.m.
  • Rules: 2 to 25 people; closed shoes recommended; hair cap provided; not all rooms are wheelchair accessible; full refund if you cancel at least 7 days ahead.
  • Closed: visits are suspended in December.
  • Getting there: the dairy lists bus stop 23 "Park est" and has a large car park. A taxi covers the 4.8 km in about 8 minutes. On Radio Taxi Parma's published day tariff (€4 flag fall plus €1.60 per km) that is about €12 on the meter, about €14 if you phone for the cab, each way.

The shop sells Parmigiano at €22.90 per kg for 24-month in 1 kg pieces, and is open Monday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Paid tours: what €135 buys

GetYourGuide's Parma page, checked September 29, 2026, listed these dairy tours (prices "from", per person):

  • ParmaLook, Parmigiano and Parma ham tour, €135, 4 hours: van from Parma (8:30 or 10 a.m., meeting at Viale Paolo Borsellino 31), a dairy and a family ham house in the hills, tastings with wine. 950 reviews.
  • Parmesan dairy tour with tasting near Parma, 1 hour: from €55.
  • From milk to wheel, 2 hours: from €44.
  • Dairy visit and Parmigiano masterclass, 1.5 hours: from €35.
  • Traditional dairy visit with tasting, 2.5 hours: from €80.

The honest math: Ugolotti's own tour is €23. The €135 tour's value is the van and the second stop, a ham house. If you have a car, you can book both yourself for €49 in total, but not in one morning if you want to see cheese made: the prosciutto house in Langhirano runs its English tour at 10:30 a.m., just as Ugolotti's 9 a.m. visit ends, 30 minutes' drive away. Do them on two mornings, or Conti first and Ugolotti's 12:30 p.m. slot after. If you have no car and want both, the tour is the easier option. Our tour or DIY page does the full sum.

Free visits: Caseifici Aperti

On the Consortium's open-dairy weekends, many dairies open for free visits and tastings. See our Caseifici Aperti page for the dates announced so far. The rest of the year, book one of the dairies above.

What to know before you go

  • Wear closed, flat shoes: dairy floors are wet.
  • Bring a cool bag if you plan to buy; shops vacuum-pack.
  • Americans can fly the cheese home; Britons cannot. The rules are on our Parmigiano page.
  • For the history rather than the vats, the Parmigiano Reggiano Museum moved from Soragna to Fontevivo in June 2026 and opens weekends only.
