Culatello cellar tasting

• The Culatello Museum: maps, documents, photographs, video and rural objects tracing the Bassa's pork tradition and the Spigaroli family's history, ending in the old aging cellars. Allow 45 minutes.
• The cellars: the estate says the marquesses Pallavicino built them in 1320 to cure salumi, age cheese and store wine, and that culatelli from here went to the Sforza court in Milan.
• Po Forest: an outdoor extension, 1.5 km with 12 stages, through the Po floodplain woods and past black pigs bred in the open. About an hour; audio guide or a €1 brochure.
• Castle rooms: €3 on top of the museum ticket.

Open Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., last entry 5:30 p.m., from January 1 to 6 and February 1 to December 30. Closed Mondays that are not holidays. The estate's own museum page also says it is closed from January 7 to February 10, so for early February, phone. The estate warns the museum may close for events, so phone first (+39 0524 936539). On October 18, 2026 it opens only for free one-hour guided visits at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., bookable at [email protected].

Two options, both booked in advance. The Hosteria del Maiale e del Culatello is the informal room; the starred restaurant has windows onto the Po. The estate's Italian site, checked September 29, 2026, says the restaurant is closed all day Monday and at lunch on Tuesday and Wednesday, while the hosteria is open every day. This is a car trip. The estate's directions are written for drivers, and we found no public transport option we could verify. Food Valley Travel sells a "Big Fives" day (Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m.) that includes a private visit to a culatello producer at 11 a.m., but its price is shown only at booking. The GetYourGuide Parma listings we checked on September 29, 2026 included no culatello-only tour.

So the answer is plain: doing it yourself is cheaper and the only simple option. Drive up in the morning, eat lunch on the estate, and add Busseto or the Reggia di Colorno in the afternoon. The Bassa and the Po page plans the loop.

The Consortium lists 20 producers; several sell from their own shops. We could not reach their booking pages to confirm visit prices, so we name none here. The easiest alternative is a plate in town: culatello costs €14 at Trattoria del Tribunale. In November, November Porc brings stalls and tastings to Polesine, Zibello and the neighboring towns.
