Oltretorrente walk

Strada Imbriani and Via D'Azeglio are the quarter's two main streets; the lanes between them are where the 1922 defenses went up. Via D'Azeglio has a camera-enforced bus lane, so expect buses.

From August 1 to 6, 1922, as the national general strike collapsed, the fascist party sent about 10,000 squad members into Parma. The people of the Oltretorrente and of the Naviglio and Saffi districts built barricades and dug trenches. About 350 Arditi del Popolo, commanded by Guido Picelli, organized the defense. The government declared a state of siege from midnight on August 5, and on August 6 the squads handed public order to the army and withdrew. It is remembered as one of the last successful stands against the fascist squads.

What you see today:

• Piazzale delle Barricate, about 240 m west of the Ponte di Mezzo, keeps the name.
• The Monumento alle Barricate on Piazzale Rondani, placed by the city in 1997.
• A plaque in the quarter recording the events.
• The old graffiti, painted on the embankment in the 1960s and 1970s: "Balbo t'è pasè l'Atlantic mo miga la Pèrma", Balbo, you crossed the Atlantic but not the Parma.

Arturo Toscanini was born on March 25, 1867 at Borgo Rodolfo Tanzi 13. The house has been a museum since 1967. It opens Wednesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (in July and August, weekends 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.), last entry 30 minutes before closing. A single ticket is €4, €3 reduced; under-18s and everyone on the first Sunday of the month go free. It is one of six civic museums on a €15 annual pass, which only pays if you visit four or more.

The ducal garden was laid out in 1560 in the Italian manner and later redesigned in the French style, with statues by Jean-Baptiste Boudard, including a Silenus group of 1766. The Peschiera, the fish pond, dates from 1690, made for the wedding of Odoardo Farnese; its 18th-century Trianon fountain and the pond were restored again at a cost of €2,730,000, and the city presented the finished work on July 27, 2026.

The park is free and open daily: 6 a.m. to midnight from April to October, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. from November to March. It has a kiosk with tables, toilets, a children's play area and a dog area. The Palazzo del Giardino in the park houses the provincial Carabinieri command and has no public visiting hours; the restored Palazzetto Eucherio Sanvitale, built in 1520, was nearly finished but not open in September 2026. • A beer: Bastian Contrario, a brewpub at Strada Inzani 34/A beside Via D'Azeglio, opens at 6 p.m. every day. One of its beers is called Agosto 1922, after the barricades. It does not publish prices online.

Wednesday to Sunday, starting around 10:30 a.m., gets you to Toscanini's house before lunch and into the park for the early afternoon. On Mondays and Tuesdays the museum is shut, but the rest of the walk works.
